Perdido Street Station
I have a confession to make: When I began writing this, I was going to give Perdido Street Station a bad review. This book infuriated and exasperated me beyond belief. It also left me with a profound sense of nausea and an excess of adrenaline in my system, rather like a car accident on the highway.
Part of what’s at work here is that China Mieville is no ordinary sci-fi fantasy writer: Here is a man (yes, man) who has a doctorate from the London School of Economics, and who once ran as a Socialist Alliance candidate in the British General Election. Those influences are readily apparent in the multi-layered nature of the novel, and, strangely enough, the more I wrote about the flaws in the novel, the more they began to look like genius, or at least, really good planning.
The truth about this book is that it’s unsettlingly like real life: messy, complicated, irritating, interesting, political, nasty, and brutish (although not, at 710 pages, short). Not bad for a novel whose main characters are a half-bird half-man creature, a thaumaturge, a robot, a psychotic spider, assorted evil government stooges, and a woman with a bug instead of a head.
Perdido Street Station is set in “New Crobuzon”, a city of Mieville’s invention. New Crobuzon is a sprawling, polluted, jumbled, super-industrial nightmare of a lawless city, run by a totalitarian government. It is made up of a motley collection of neighborhoods, criss-crossed by two rivers, the River Tar and the River Canker, and tied together by a set of air rail lines which emanate from the station at the heart of the system: Perdido Street Station.
The city is populated by a number of weird and miscellaneous races, including humans, cactus people, constructs (robots), vodyanoi (water people who can shape the element into lasting forms through magic), and khepri (a race of beings whose males are scarab beetles and whose females have “human” bodies and scarabs for heads). For all its creativity, so much strangeness can become quite stomach-turning: one of the elements in the novel that made me nauseous was the vast numbers of Remade, people of all races who have been physically changed or deformed by court order, in punishment for their (sometimes dubious) crimes. To give an example, one of the Remades is an infanticide whose murdered baby’s arms have been grafted to her face as a constant reminder of her crime. The problem with the idea of the Remade, like many other ideas in the novel, is that it is such a powerful image that it could form a story in itself and it becomes disconcerting and overwhelming as just one of the many threads in Mieville’s weave.
The main storyline of Perdido Street Station concerns Isaac Dan der Grimnebulin, an overweight scientist and thaumaturge (read: magician), and his lover Lin, a khepri. The relationship between Lin and Isaac has to be kept secret, because the rest of the city views such liaisons as unnatural. Though in the beginning the reader tends to agree with this assessment, one of the virtues of this novel is that such objections very quickly fade away —aside from the obvious and refreshingly tender love between the couple, Lin’s physical differences look downright natural next to the deformities of the Remades.
Isaac spends most of his time doing experiments in a warehouse in a bad (really bad) part of town, on equipment he’s stolen from New Crobuzon University. Most of it even still has the university logo stamped on it. He’s chasing Crisis Theory, a kind of unifying Theory of Everything, but he’s not getting very far. One day, a garuda —a winged bird-man from the desert, far from New Crobuzon —comes to see him. This garuda has had his wings cut off as punishment by his tribe for something which he will not describe, but refers to as “choice-theft in the second degree, without respect.” He explains that the theft of someone else’s choices is the worst possible offense among the garuda, and that he has committed it, though he refuses to elaborate. In punishment, along with the removal of his wings, he has been exiled from the tribe and given the name of “Too Too Abstract Individual Yagharek Not To Be Respected.”(This has to be one of my favorite character names of all time.) Yagharek has one desire: to fly again. He commissions Isaac to find a solution to his problem. In his search, Isaac obtains specimens of flying creatures from all over the province. Among these specimens is a strange caterpillar that appears to live on hallucinogens, and is not what it seems.
Meanwhile, Lin, who is an artist, is commissioned to make a life-size sculpture (in moldable spit, an art form peculiar to the khepri) of Motley, a vague and threatening underworld figure. His reasons for hiring her are not clear, but the commission sets a chain of events in motion that may end in disaster for Lin.
This is only the barest outline of the beginning of the plot, and can in no way give a full sense of the novel’s scope. I haven’t even gotten to the robot mutiny, the spider that moves in four dimensions, or the visit to the Ambassador of Hell. Reading Perdido Street Station is like getting beat over the head with a hygrometer, three street musicians and the collected works of Marx and Dickens, all at the same time. Will Yagharek ever fly? Will Lin resolve her problems with her people? Will Isaac lose some weight? These questions, and many others, will be answered by reading the book —or not. One of the best and most annoying things about the novel is the number of lose ends that it does NOT tie up.
Mieville has done an incredible job of creating a world that, if it is not “believable” in any normal sense of the word, at least follows its own rules. This world is not one you’d want to visit, but it certainly is fascinating. At best, New Crobuzon puts the lie to the expression “Home is where the heart is,” unless the heart happens to be a specimen preserved in formaldehyde. At worst, I can’t imagine why every last character in the novel doesn’t go screaming from the city to hide in desert dens, or stow away on tall ships. Anything, it seems, would be better than having robot arms grafted onto your body. Then again, they say a person can get used to anything. And I’m glad that someone found New Crobuzon worth writing about. It makes for a damn good read.
