The Way That He Sings: Ambient Listening and Kranky Records
There’s no accounting for taste, they say, and most all of us would agree. We all have our own idiosyncratic preferences about what we like to eat, watch, play, or listen to. For example, I quite enjoyed William Basinski’s Disintegration Loops, Vol. 3, which came out last year, and consists of two decaying tape loops, the longer of which plays for 50 minutes. You may not enjoy it. You may, on the other hand, enjoy Aerosmith and/or Guns N’ Roses. I do not, and have not for quite a long time, despite a more than decent amount of exposure. Does Disintegration Loops contain better “songs,” better playing, or more excitement than Toys in the Attic or Appetite for Destruction? According to most standards, probably not. What, then, is my problem?
My problem is that I’m an ambient listener. I’ve known this for quite some time, but haven’t really been able to express it very well; I’ll make an attempt here. You may recall that you clicked through to this article under the Reviews heading, and as such I will detail the ambient pleasures to be found on a two-disc compilation, called Kompilation, that came out on Kranky Records last year.
I began to understand my particular musical preferences when I discovered in high school that not everybody shared my disdain for the two now-decrepit rock bands mentioned above. It seemed pretty clear to me (apart from the visual atrocity that is Steven Tyler’s face) that both bands failed to appeal to me because of the sound of their wretched singers. I didn’t mind Aerosmith’s “Dream On” (which lacks Tyler’s signature style) or the beginning of GnR’s “Patience,” the understated beauty of which is destroyed the second Axl starts singing.
I’ve mentioned both My Morning Jacket and Mark Richardson in these [web]pages before, but I’ll do so again to demonstrate my point as best I can. In “The Way That He Sings,” my first favorite MMJ song, lead singer Jim James, as either self-mythologist or hero worshipper, says, “It’s the way that he sings, not the words that he says or the band.” This is profoundly true of My Morning Jacket, as any fan would tell you: Not one of us would shy away from purchasing a record consisting solely of Jim James’s reverb-rich vocals with no supporting rhythm or instrumentation. He doesn’t even need lyrics, just the power and emotion he conveys by the sound of his voice.
My reaction to their second album, At Dawn, ran strikingly similar to a Brian Eno essay I read in an anthology called Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Music. He writes about ambient music, a genre to which he more or less gave birth (though there was plenty of precedent for what he did), that it is composed for the listener: “to swim in, to float in, to get lost inside.” During my favorite moments on At Dawn, such as the title track, “Hopefully,” and “I Needed It Most,” the music invites exactly these reactions, and even though the album has great Southern rock guitar, memorable hooks, and some pretty good lyrics, it’s the ambient qualities I’m drawn to.
My friend Charles, when I was telling him last month how excited I was about the return of Mark Richardson’s “Resonant Frequency” column on the Pitchfork website, asked me why that was, but I couldn’t really say. Probably it has a lot to do with the way Richardson describes his relationship to music, which he says has less to do with songs than with sounds. An ambient approach to music listening isn’t one you see in a lot of mainstream music writing, so I was excited when I discovered that someone had articulated a position toward music that I felt was similar to mine, even if I hadn’t thought much about it before. Charles also asked me once if I wasn’t frustrated with the dearth of good lyrics in most contemporary music, and I had to reply that I wasn’t because, as I now understand, I’m an ambient listener.
That said, I’m not sure everyone will get into the music on the Kranky label as enthusiastically as I have over the past year or so, but I’ll try to convince you that you should.
As far as the artist roster for Kranky goes, you’ve probably heard of Low, who have a new album out, and have most likely encountered the name of Godspeed You Black Emperor, if not their actual music. Neither of them are with the label anymore. Kranky does currently have artists like Charalambides, Out Hud, and Keith Fullerton Whitman, none of whom are big names, but who tend to be pretty well-respected among those into psychedelic folk, dance punk, or ambient/drone “music,” respectively.
Whitman, whose Playthroughs album (one of my favorites) was likely the first record I heard from the Chicago-based label, has two tracks on the 2004 sampler. The first, “Stereo Music for Serge Modular Synthesizer [Excerpt],” is a six-minute drone piece, most probably based on sounds from the Serge Modular Synthesizer. It’s pretty much a held tone or chord with various reverberations, timbral alterations, and other humming sounds coming and going. The second is “Schnee,” which runs a little over seven minutes and is based on simple acoustic guitar strumming but adds and subtracts cymbals, drums, and electric feedback, all of which result in a most pleasurable listening experience.
Charalambides’s “Joy Shapes” is a swirling, eleven-minute long deconstruction of something that sounds like it could have been a more traditional folky/singer-songwriter track at one time. Vocalist Christina Carter repeats the words “joy shapes,” among other things, while bits of disparate acoustic guitar parts float in and out over top of a not quite foreboding bass hum.
There are a couple of more traditional, beat-heavy electronic tracks, like Strategy’s “Drumsolo’s Delight” and Out Hud’s “Dad, There’s a Little Phrase Called Too Much Information,” which throws in electric guitars as well. “Too Much Information” sounds at times, though not always, like !!!’s “Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard,” which makes sense because the two groups share several members.
Perhaps my favorite is a version of “Even If You’re Never Awake” from Stars of the Lid, who’ve been together since the early nineties. The track starts off with some beautiful sustained organ-like synthesizer sounds and over the course of the first half introduces a string bass section, the sort of which you might encounter on the soundtrack to the aftermath of a tragic battle scene, and some ethereal woodwinds that float in and out. A piano makes its entrance, sounding as if it’s being played from some enormous echo chamber next door. As if they’d been reading Eno’s manifesto while composing, it sounds precisely like the kind of stuff you’d want “to swim in, to float in, to get lost inside.”
None of the tracks mentioned here have lyrics (at least not in a traditional sense), they don’t have verses, choruses, or even rhythm for the most part. But then, they’re not really “elevator music” either. They all reward close listening, some even demand it. They don’t want to burrow into your skull, and the artists don’t try to wow you with their instrumental or vocal prowess, but at least for me, each of these is an environment I want to come back to and live inside of for a while, if only through my ears.
