An Odd Union of Religion, Comics and Keanu

Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves, directed by Francis Lawrence, and released by Warner Brothers, could best be described as The Matrix with cigarettes and God thrown in (strangely enough, Keanu Reeves even dresses like Mr. Anderson throughout the entire film). A film version of the Hellblazer comic book series, Constantine is the latest in a series of comic book adaptations that includes Spiderman and X-Men, both of which had great box-office success.

In Constantine, Keanu Reeves plays John Constantine, a chain-smoking exorcist working against the minions of hell in Los Angeles. The world of the Hellblazer series is one in which the agents of Heaven and Hell exert direct influence over everyday life in the form of half-angel half-humans or half-demon half humans who walk the Earth, working for their respective sides. Constantine, dying from cancer, seems to not have a place in Heaven even after many years of struggle on the side of God. Now, in the last days of his life, he continues work against half-demons in the hopes that he can avoid eternal damnation. This work involves collaboration with a detective played (unconvincingly) by Rachel Weisz; they uncover a bizarre plot revolving around the “Spear of Destiny” (which for non-biblically aware folk is apparently the spear that pierced Jesus’s side during the crucifixion) and spend the rest of the film working to stop the ne’erdowells behind the sinister plan.

Comic book adaptations have become one of my favorite film genres. Unlike James Bond films or other big-ticket action films, comic book adaptations are more palatable because I can accept from the beginning that they are fantasy, so suspension of disbelief is easier to achieve because of this – the films depict an alternate reality in which many more things are possible. Additionally, these films do not hesitate to use style more overtly than most contemporary action films.

Though prior to this film I was completely unaware of the Hellblazer series, a little Internet research revealed the dramatic inconsistencies between the comic and the movie. Nationality is the big problem; John Constantine is supposed to be English, and is also supposed to live in London. Though Hellblazer seems to be a reasonably popular comic, it lacks the legions of loyal fans that could pressure studios into accuracy in the film version.

Thankfully, Reeves performs far better than he did in any of the Matrix films. He slides quite easily into his role as a jaded (and quite literally damned) agent of God in the fight against Satan et al. Another impressive performance comes from Tilda Swindon who plays the archangel Gabriel, an androgynous character who, it becomes clear by the end of the movie, is clearly insane. Swindon does an excellent job; Gabriel’s insanity is convincing and not overdone. Suspension of disbelief is achieved quite well; This film is one of the few that completely brings the viewer into its own version of reality. I left the cinema and almost expected to see half-demons walking down the street towards me.

Atmosphere is the best attribute of the film. Director Francis Lawrence convincingly shows visually how in the fight between good and evil nothing is clean, nothing is cut and dry. John Constantine’s moral ambiguity is expressed as the dusty, gritty, wet atmosphere that pervades the film. This gritty style manifests itself in many ways: much of the film is at night, the main characters live above and in a bowling alley, and a taxi is the primary means of transport. One particular scene embodies this style well: Constantine, who suffers from lung cancer, is bent over in front of a gas station in Los Angeles in the middle of the night, coughing his lungs out, when a demon composed entirely of insects attacks him.

Constantine does have serious flaws as a film: Keanu Reeves plays the jaded character so well that when it is time for him to show genuine anger, he is unconvincing; some of the shots that use the many special effects seem contrived — at one point the Hell version of Los Angeles is shown, but the director would have done better to omit the scene and instead let the viewer’s imagination do the work. Additionally, insufficient exposition is provided, leaving the viewer with a sense that the movie would be much better had he or she done research ahead of time. This tends to be the weakness of comic book movies, particularly if the director wants to avoid spending the entire film developing the characters. Many comic book adaptations start either at the beginning (Spiderman) or spend time explaining the background (Hellboy). This film avoids either course, leaving the viewer a bit in the lurch.

Constantine is well worth seeing, but prospective viewers should go thinking “comic book” not “cinema art.” It is easily enjoyed in the same spirit as films like X-Men or Hellboy, but cannot compare too favorably with serious cinema. Like these other films, Constantine is highly entertaining, but in no danger of winning many Oscars. Instead, Constantine is the type of film likely to end up in your shopping cart at Target after you pass the DVD sales rack: good, but not worth paying the full price.

James Lloyd is headed to Navy OCS this summer, and isn’t so keen on organized religion.
