The Kid in Me
I realized something about children’s books the other day. As I was flipping through some of the more beautifully illustrated volumes found in my library, I had a thought: Little kids love picture books. Nothing novel there. But then that thought was followed by another, slightly more interesting one: in about fourth grade, something happens to kids. Suddenly, those amusing and colorful tomes become childish and silly. They are relegated to younger siblings and carelessly replaced by those social climbers, the chapter books. Then, years later, something happens to us again. Right about the time we leave college, picture books regain their intrigue, their humor, their mystique. Children’s books are beautiful and funny, and somehow all the humor and lessons within them become more meaningful in the context of our lives. If you have doubts, try reading the original Winnie the Pooh stories by A.A. Milne. But those books have chapters and not too many pictures, so I take that back. Instead, try one of these:
1) Olivia . . . and the Missing Toy (2003) by Ian Falconer
If you haven’t met Olivia yet, go now to your local library or bookstore and find her. Go. Right now. I will wait. Olivia is a little pig who walks on two legs and wears only red. She has a huge mouth and huge ears and a penchant for moving the cat around as children are wont do: by grabbing it under the armpits. Although there are several Olivia books available, I chose to review this one because of the opening page. A black and white picture of the sphinx fills the entire page, and superimposed on top of it is little Olivia riding a camel, wearing a red fez, and hauling her one-eyed stuffed bear. The story opens: “One day Olivia was riding a camel in Egypt. . . . “ This is completely impossible, of course, since Olivia is basically a little girl in pig form — and on the next page you find out that she has been dreaming — but what a great way to start a book! The illustrations are black and white with splashes of red and green and the occasional black and white photograph. The writing is funny, and the characters — Olivia, her parents, her siblings, and her cat — are amazingly realistic. Olivia, like few characters of her time, is destined to win you over, and perhaps demand a few things in a loud voice in the process.
2) Arnie the Doughnut (2003) by Laurie Keller
The more children’s books I read, the more I think that children’s book authors inhabit an entirely different universe. I mean, how do they think of this stuff? Arnie chronicles the life of Arnie the Doughnut, from shop to customer. The book is hilarious and the illustrations are crowded, colorful, and hectic, with doughnuts, muffins, and other confections partaking in sidebar conversations on almost every page. Arnie starts life in the “ringy-dingy doughnut-making thingy” and, to his great joy, is one day picked out by a customer named Mr. Bing. Arnie is thrilled . . . until he discovers that his purpose in this world is to be eaten (“Isn’t that cute? . . . He wants to hold me,”thinks Arnie right before he sees Mr. Bing’s mouth). Mr. Bing is, of course, shocked when Arnie shouts at him in order to prevent him from chomping Arnie’s head off. They eventually get over their mutual distrust and soon work out a very functional arrangement. But I don’t want to ruin the ending.
3) Squids will be Squids: Fresh Morals, Beastly Fables (1998) by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith.
Scieszka and Smith are the same comic and artistic geniuses who created The Stinky Cheese Man and Math Curse, among other off-beat tales. They are twisted and funny, and their illustrations are fabulous. The “Serious Historical Forward”from Squids makes the apt point that fables are really just an acceptable way to gossip about other people’s foibles. Turn those people into animals, and you’ve made yourself a modern day Aesop. For example, in the fable “Little Walrus,”the young walrus is told by her mother to always tell the truth. Then one day Little Walrus is home all alone and has to answer the phone. When asked if her mother is available, Little Walrus answers, “No, she’s out having the hair taken off her lip.”The moral, according to the authors is: “You should always tell the truth. But if your mom is out having the hair taken off her lip, you might want to forget a few of the details.”The illustrations are no less hilarious.
Now, go forth and find your own inner children. If you’re ever feeling lost in that endeavor, I’m positive that there’s a children’s book that will do the trick.
