Newspapers, Fame, and Husker Football
When I visit my parents in Lincoln, Nebraska I much prefer the local newspaper, the Lincoln Journal-Star, to its larger and better-known brethren. Part of the reason is that I grew up reading it — it holds fond memories — and part of the reason is that I don’t really like newspapers all that much, so I don’t care that The New York Times has better reporting and many fewer typos. But the main reason is that the Journal-Star a newspaper written by local Nebraskans for local Nebraskans. And while non-locals may laugh at the section on faith that runs every Sunday, or the “Regular Mowing Promotes Healthy Lawn” feature that ran on May 1st, it’s exactly these things that I enjoy. The paper reports what people are interested in — it just happens that people are interested in religion and lawn-mowing.1
And why not? Why should anyone pretend to be enthralled by international politics? I know that when I read a newspaper, I read it in the following order: sports section, comics, Dear Abbey, Op-Ed page, perhaps the movie listings, and then I’m done. I’m not ashamed to admit that I find national and international politics to be boring; my being aware of them has had little positive effect on my life.2 And so, when The New York Times gives me a glut of well-done and in-depth reporting on that very subject, the main result is that I feel guilty for not following politics closely enough.3 Which is probably why I usually end up reading The Times’ spectacular Art and Leisure reporting, along with The Magazine insert at the expense of the other sections of the paper.
But with the Journal-Star, I don’t even consider reading about politics — all their national and international news is culled from the AP wire, and comprises two very skimpy sections. The Journal Star excels at the local stuff — the report about hunting, the feature on the Lincoln painter Keith Jacobshagen, and the piece about a fifth-grade classroom at Sheridan Elementary. These articles give a true representation of southeast Nebraska, and discuss the people and places I interact with when I’m in Lincoln — if I read these sections, I’ll have something worth talking about, I’ll feel engaged in the community.4
So it was with this sense of community, of happiness, that I sat down on my parents’ couch and began perusing the April 16th, 2005 sports section. It was the day of the annual Red-White Game5 and the main feature was entitled “Memories in Red and White: Six Spectacular Spring Game Moments” and was written by Steven M. Sipple. Having been to several Spring Games myself, I fondly remembered the April 23rd, 1994 game, the capsule of which read:
Freshman I-back Lawrence Phillips rushed for 156 yards on 16 carries, mostly against the first-string defense. “I didn’t see many questions he couldn’t answer today,” coach Tom Osborne said. Phillips raised eyebrows on a 19-yard run where he put a hand down, kept his feet moving and broke several tackles. After the game, Phillips spent about 30 minutes signing autographs as the media waited for interviews.
I remember that game fondly because it was a scrimmage comprised of the team that would go on to win Tom Osborne’s first national title. And then the next year, 1995, the Cornhuskers had what many observers consider the finest team in the history of college football. In ’95, you could see it in the scrimmage — those guys were good. They were fast, they executed plays, and they hit each other hard. It was a team whose entire offensive and defensive lines went on to play in the NFL, and that had, as second string, Brook Berringer and Ahman Green.
I find such reminiscing about the great Husker teams to be fun, so I enthusiastically perused the other capsules, hoping for more jumping-off points. But, as I looked, I realized that they had a decidedly opposite theme: they were all about football players who, for one day in April, had risen up to achieve glory and statewide fame, and then plunged back into the depths of anonymity (with the exception of Lawrence Phillips, who achieved something much worse — notoriety6).
Three representative examples:
April 25, 1987: Jerry Dunlap, a freshman QB from Ventura, Calif., fired an 80-yard TD pass in the fourth to break a Spring Game record set earlier in the day of Gerry Gdowski’s 76-yard pass to Terry Rodgers. In the 1988 Spring Game, Dunlap came back with a 10-for-19, 122-yard passing performance. He never made the travel roster for a regular-season game, but was a holder in home games as a junior and senior.
April 18, 1999: It was a classic case of “No, no, no, no … yes!” Mike Demps, a defensive back from Fort Worth, Texas, who had a 4.38-second speed in the 40-yard dash, hauled in a second-quarter kickoff 8 yards deep in the end zone and returned it for a touchdown, providing the game’s most electrifying moment. Demps, slowed by hamstring and knee injuries at NU, never lettered and later wound up playing Arena ball.
April 15, 2000: Playing at about 75 percent of full speed because of a nagging abdominal injury, redshirt freshman walk-on Chris Butler rushed 16 times for 118 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown sprint. A couple of months later, mired in a fifth-place tie on the depth chart, Butler transferred to Auburn to be closer to his hometown of Hoover, Ala. In the 1999 Spring Game, he rushed 10 times for 60 yards.
Reading all this, I was struck by the fleeting nature of glory: here was a list of three players, all of whom had appeared to have bright futures and had already felt the pleasure of adulation as they performed their gridiron feats. Each of them must have, if only for a few months, imagined themselves becoming stars — they must have compared themselves favorably to the Husker greats, such a Mike Rozier and Johnny Rodgers. And in a sense, for a few months, they were stars — they were at the top, they had proven themselves in Memorial Stadium. It may have been a scrimmage, it may have been in April, but on one glorious day they had done it — they had run with the best of the Huskers.
And yet, in the end, what these players have in common is that, years later, the three of them are reduced to footnotes in a local newspaper — none of them truly made it, none of them were truly successful in football. And while it’s well-known that hardly anyone achieves greatness, the fact of it hit me hard that April afternoon — I guess I still had some lingering fantasies of being great myself one day. But the knowledge that Mike Demps never made it, that Chris Butler never had a chance, and that Jerry Dunlap was bested by Gerry Gdowski, somehow prompted me to realize that I’d most likely not become the next John Updike.
It was a depressing thought and I had to rally myself by thinking of the people who had done it, most especially of Gerry Gdowski, the man who had achieved what Jerry Dunlap was striving for. Gdowski was All Big Eight first team quarterback in ’89. He was a star, a virtuoso of the option, and a folk hero in Nebraska — the local boy from Fremont who had made good by directing the offense of the nationally ranked Cornhuskers. Gdowski’s glory had been compacted into one autumn in 1989 — the games were on the radio every Saturday afternoon, and I, along with the rest of the state, listened as he ran for touchdowns. That was his true and wonderful glory, one that I appreciate even now. It must have been fulfilling and grand for him, flattering and marvelous, but even then, even in that autumn, he wasn’t really famous — he was just a quarterback for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Or, rather, it wasn’t that he wasn’t famous, it was just that fame has boundaries, limitations — even the most famous of the famed are unknown to much of the world’s population. For example: Who is the most popular Chinese movie star? What is the name of Ecuador’s most brilliant scientist? Who is the best living American author? These are questions that some people would be able to enthusiastically answer, but that would cause most of us to shrug our shoulders and say, “I don’t even have any idea . . . ”
And so I had to remind myself that fame is a construction, an invention. It exists, but only in an unstable sense — you can only be famous when you’re around people who recognize you as famous. And sometimes it’s easy for me (and many people, I suppose) to forget that. Certainly large national newspapers like The New York Times don’t help — they talk about the most famous and successful people, about Bush, Kate Winslet, Kim Jong II, George Steinbrenner, Martha Stewart, etc, and occasionally it gets to be tiring — I don’t know these people, they have nothing to do with my day-to-day life, and frankly, I don’t usually care about them. (Though I’m told I should — these people are famous, after all.)
It’s at times like these that I turn to the Lincoln Journal-Star: it talks about things I do, people I know (who show up with surprising frequency in the paper), and places I go. Its narrow local focus reminds me that national renown isn’t everything — the little things, such as drinking a glass of lemonade while perusing the op-ed page or reading Peanuts over breakfast, are the stuff of life, the details that add up to overall satisfaction — and the Journal-Star reporting reflects that. There are articles about how to make a good chocolate sundae, and about a new professor at the university — and when I’m done reading them, I’m reminded that I don’t at all need to be famous to be happy.

1. Do not be confused — I’m not at all trying to portray Lincolnites as uneducated buffoons. Lincoln is a fairly cultured city — it’s been the life-long home of Ted Kooser, current U.S. poet laureate, as well as home to the nationally renowned Sheldon Art Gallery and the International Quilt Study Center, just to name a few things of which Lincolnites can be proud.
2. Apparently there has recently been much to-do about the Pope’s death, and about Terri Schiavo, and, since I cared about neither, I was pleased to not have paid any attention; I’d heard the news reports were endless, repetitive, and fairly uninformative. It seems to me that if I read an essay by Isaiah Berlin I’ll learn much more and be much wiser when I’m finished than if I spend the same amount of time reading about Terri Schiavo or the Pope.
3. My guilt stems from the fact that everyone keeps telling me I should pay attention to politics if I want to be a good citizen and to some degree I believe them, just because they keep telling me it’s so, causing me, when I see The New York Times, to look at it and think, “I should be enthralled.” . . . And yet, I’m not.
4. Minor Epiphany: This is perhaps why so many people across the Midwest enjoy watching the local news — television that has such low production quality and intelligence that, until just now, I’d found it unfathomable that anyone would want to watch it. (Incidentally, I’d like to point out that the quality of the Lincoln Journal-Star is higher than that of generic local news.)
5. The Red-White Game is the culmination of the spring practice of the Nebraska Cornhusker football team. The team splits into two squads — one wearing red jerseys, the other white — and scrimmages against each other in a simulated game in Memorial Stadium, complete with referees, a game-clock, and thousands of adoring fans. It’s an opportunity for Nebraskans to get a preview of what the team will look like in the coming fall, as well as a great excuse to watch and think about football. The past two spring games have had an attendance over sixty thousand — not bad considering it’s an intersquad event.
6. This is how the Phillips capsule fits in. Though he did achieve college football success, he was also the subject of a national controversy in 1995 and thus his popularity was short-lived. After the Michigan State game in ’95, he threw his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, prompting him to be arrested and suspended from the team for several months. He had a trial, pled guilty, and performed a large amount of community service. But he was not kicked off the team because Osborne, the coach, didn’t want Phillips (who had no family — he was raised by an aunt) to aimlessly wander without any direction or purpose in his life.
The fact that Phillips was not immediately thrown off the team caused a national outrage in the media and I found the resulting reporting to be predatory, unfair, and uninformed. Many writers (particularly one for the Boston Globe) demanded that Phillips be thrown off the team, and allowed to rot in a gutter. The Boston writer opined that since this wasn’t what had happened, Osborne must care only about winning. This was patently not true: Phillips was suspended for eight games, including the most important games of the regular season: Colorado, Kansas, and Kansas State. Furthermore, the Huskers obviously didn’t need him to win — they had Benning, Childs, and Green in the backfield, all of whom were exceedingly capable and all of whom averaged over five yards a carry.
What was never answered was how kicking Phillips off the team and allowing him to aimlessly drift would solve anything. If the goal was to prevent Phillips from beating future girlfriends, and of helping him get his personal life on track (which I think it should be), how does abandoning him, penniless and frustrated, solve anything? Most likely, the result of kicking him off the team would have been that he’d continue to cause trouble, probably much more than if he were allowed to stay on the team under the watchful eye of the coaches and player-support personnel. The coaches and university took this seriously. The guidelines he had to follow once he was reinstated to the team were: attend counseling, anger management classes, and all his academic classes. He also had to make curfew and complete all his community service. And, in a sense, the structure worked: during his remaining time at Nebraska, he followed all the guidelines. I doubt he would have behaved so well if he’d been, at the age of 21, kicked off the team and allowed to aimlessly wander.
As it turned out, Phillips, because of the pressure from the media and the locals (many of whom were conflicted over whether they wanted to cheer for an abuser), left school after the 1995 season and declared for the NFL draft. His NFL career was unsuccessful, at least in part because he couldn’t avoid getting in trouble. It was unfortunate, but this does not mean Osborne had made the wrong decision: Osborne knew Phillips was troubled and was trying to do what was best for him — and, for a short time, it worked. That the final outcome was not what was desired does mitigate the fact that Osborne’s actions were principled.
