Frank Gehry’s Friends
The Weisman Art Museum’s latest exhibit, “West!,” is touted as an opportunity to see the artists who influenced Frank Gehry, the famous architect of the Bilbao Guggenheim and of the Weisman Art Museum itself. The exhibit is subtitled, “Frank Gehry and the Artists of Venice Beach, 1962-1978,” and displays pieces from that place and period — a vibrant artistic community that, as the exhibition write-up explains, “began to claim attention from the New York-centered art world.” And, because Gehry himself lived in nearby Santa Monica and knew many of the artists of Venice Beach, the exhibition also seeks to show the ways in which he was influenced by his contemporaries. At once, it’s a fantastic idea for a show and one that seems it can’t fail, at least in terms of capturing the Southern California milieu: the relevant pieces are world-class and connected to each other in a clear manner, and so, on first inspection, the exhibit should hold together as an articulate whole, as well as have many impressive individual works.
And it does — particularly enjoyable is the work of Charles Arnoldi, who makes simple twine or wood sculptures that resemble oversized paperclips twisted into shapes. For example, Television (1971) is made out of wood and is an outline of a five-foot-high square, propped up with a stick. Or Möbius Dick (1970-71), which is a noodle-shaped piece of rope twisted into a möbius strip and hung on the wall as if it were a lasso or a retired garden hose. The exhibit features six of Arnoldi’s pieces and each one describes an area and calls to mind an object while doing only the barest of representational work — the result being that they create large rents of outlined empty space. By featuring emptiness, his pieces delineate an idea, a shape of something that could exist in the space he describes, and this seems to be one of the major themes of the Venice Beach artists: the exploration of shapes and spaces — the simple pondering of volume. Take for example Larry Bell’s 15″ Cube (1965), which is exactly what the title describes, made out of silicon-monoxide-coated glass and a chrome frame. The box is translucent and has minimalist overtones: within the context of the exhibit, it makes the viewer aware that in every empty space — vacuum or filled with pollution — there still exists something — an area where things can be placed, where matter can pass through.
Guy Dill’s Untitled (1971) also infuses the quotidian with a sense of wonder, though Dill fills space rather than outlines it. Untitled is made from individual blocks of fir that are suspended from the wall in such a way that they form a single shaft that juts out with the prominence and suddenness of an I-beam. It’s at once a breath-taking reference to minimalism and an invitation to ponder: How is the piece made? Is it just artistic or is it — as it appears to be — a commonly used architectural structure? It turns out it’s the latter and, consequently, Dill’s Untitled underscores another of the major themes of the artists of Venice Beach: art can take surprisingly ordinary and practical forms. As the little placard next to the piece describes: “. . . [Frank] Gehry recalls his first interaction with this work as a revelatory experience. He realized that what was, in fact, a structure — something well known to him as an architect — could also be a work of art.”
This write-up delineates one of the major tenets of Gehry’s architecture: in his most well-known building, the Bilbao Guggenheim, he fuses the overtly artistic with the strictly practical — he makes a celebrated work of art that is also a functional museum. Unfortunately, the exhibit “West!” provides precious few insights such as these; as a whole, it’s difficult to draw many firm conclusions about Gehry’s architecture from “West!” and equally hard to understand how he was influenced by the artists of Venice Beach. This is due mostly to the fact that there are no works (or pictures or models of works) done by Gehry himself, so, aside from the obvious — the building — there’s no way to determine what Gehry’s work is like, nor to get a sense of its breadth, especially since Gehry’s most famous work, his Bilbao Guggenheim, is very similar in concept to that of the Weisman.1 Most frustrating, though, are the placards (the aforementioned placard was uncharacteristically helpful), many of which tantalizingly reference Gehry’s art without fully describing it, or are under the assumption that the museum-goer has access to Gehry’s work. For example, the following is the complete text of the write-up for Tony Berlant’s large, neo-classical sculptures:

Berlant’s constructions and collages use everyday materials and references. Part assemblage and part sculpture, his works include such things as discarded metal and tin scraps, from cookie trays to TV trays. Gehry greatly admired Berlant’s sense of color and credits the artist with helping to awaken and discipline his own use of color.
After reading this, the first thing to look for is an example of Gehry’s use of color. But, of course, there are none in the museum, aside from the building itself, which is stainless steel on the outside and white-walled on the inside — not exactly an excellent example.
Initially, this lack of example is only mildly annoying, but gradually it becomes more strident: another artist, Ed Moses, is described as “[using] color not to describe objects but rather to establish pure aesthetic experience — an important feature in Gehry’s designs as well.” But since there are none of Gehry’s works, there’s no way to see this influence. Similarly frustrating are the references to Gehry’s corrugated cardboard furniture — furniture that seems to have been quite successful and very popular (and coeval with the work on display) — and appears to have been a breakthrough for Gehry. But all this information has to be gleaned from the passing references on the placards — in the exhibit, there are no pieces of the furniture, nor are there any photos of them — not even a larger placard that describes exactly what the furniture was, what it was used for, or why it was so popular.
And there are other obvious oversights: at one point, one of the placards says, “[Robert] Irwin painted with light and Gehry was fascinated by the idea of creating space with light.” But then the placard never goes on to mention that Gehry uses light in the Weisman, both with the skylights in the interior and the reflectivity of the exterior, to create an effect that has some resonance with Irwin’s work. Pointing out and elaborating on such simple connections would go a long way towards making the exhibit more tenable and could perhaps excuse the absence of Gehry’s own work.
But the curators of “West!” utterly fail to do the legwork necessary to draw coherent comparisons between the artwork of Venice Beach and Gehry’s architecture. They seem to feel that scattering his name on some placards,2 placing “Gehry” prominently in the subtitle and write-up of the exhibit, and housing the exhibit in one of his buildings is a sufficient substitute for an acute, considered, and well-articulated discussion of the influences on his career. Which is a shame, not only because the idea of the exhibit is fantastic, but because the curators’ failure to live up to their own promises obscures the fact that the pieces in the exhibit are very good and form a ready-made and relevant exhibit on all their own. So much so that, if the exhibit were entitled “West!” and subtitled “The Artists of Venice Beach, 1962-1978,” it would be well-worth visiting; in fact, it still is — just don’t expect to learn anything about Gehry and you won’t be disappointed.
