Get Behind Me, Quixtar
“Have you ever thought of going into business for yourself?” If you’ve heard these words before, it was likely in connection to Quixtar, Amway, or another MLM (multi-level marketing) company. I didn’t know anything about MLM’s until a confusing, intriguing, and slightly unnerving encounter with a Quixtar representative sent me running to the Internet for second opinions. From reading the many skeptics’ sites, I can tell that my brief experience involved almost all of Quixtar’s sinister trademarks.
Trademark #1: Intriguing (but Vague) Introduction
I met the Quixtar IBO (”Independent Business Owner” — let’s call him Jerry) at the gas station where I work. He commented on how he seemed to see me every time he stopped there, and he asked me what my situation was. Hearing I’d graduated from a liberal arts school, he said I seemed to be an ambitious person, with good people skills, and would I be interested in making a little extra money? He said he ran his own “marketing business” out of Brainerd, Minnesota: “We do business with some big companies — maybe you’ve heard of Best Buy, OfficeMax, IBM?”
My elation at the seeming providence of a stranger offering me freelance work outweighed my confusion as to how this unassuming, rural Minnesotan would be hired by the likes of Best Buy. My imagination came to the rescue: maybe he designed brochures, or direct mailings, or, since I mentioned interest in web design, internet advertising? It seems that healthy doses of gullibility and career-desperation are the fuel on which Quixtar relies.
Jerry’s next move was the phone call. He’d be in town on Thursday, and would I be for a meeting, to learn more about his business? “If nothing else, it’s fun to meet new people, right?” Sure, I said, and I reiterated my interest in doing Internet-related work. He responded: “And that’s what we do — we’re the largest retailer of health and beauty products on the Web.” How did this relate to him marketing for Best Buy? I had no idea. But before my confusion could change my mind, Jerry hung up.
Trademark #2: Oversimplified, Motivational Presentation
When he arrived at my house, all he had in hand was a flipbook folder and a notebook. The pages in the folder were hilariously simple, idealistic, and vague. They encouraged me to imagine a life beyond my imprisoning job. What would I do with more money and free time? Would I buy a yellow sports car, like the one in the picture? Build a mansion for my grinning family, as illustrated? Or go to a beach in Sunny Tropical Somewhere?
The salient aspects of the as-yet-unexplained “business plan” were distilled into two bar graphs. One, labeled “Job,” with bars colored a drooping blue, showed a tall bar of “Money,” but slim slices of “Time” and “Security.” The other, a cheerful green, labeled “Lifestyle,” filled the available bar space in all three categories! The explication? “True lifestyle comes from having both time and money, with the security of knowing that you can control your own destiny.”
Then came the establishment of credibility. The company he worked through, established in 1999, was Quixtar, Inc., a debt-free corporation with sky-rocketing profits in its first six years, millions of website hits, and major businesses (such as Best Buy, hence his claim) jumping on this new bandwagon of success. Naturally, he didn’t tell me that Quixtar owed part of its immediate success to being created by Alticor, the parent corporation to Amway, converting thousands of Amway followers to Quixtar overnight.
Twenty minutes had passed without any new information being delivered about what this company and this man sitting in my house actually did. You have to hand it to Quixtar: they’re masters of suspense.
But now was the time for the method of this miracle machine to be unveiled. Quixtar, he explained, is like an online mall where you get paid to shop. The secret is that you can only sign up through word-of-mouth advertising — in this case the mouth being Jerry’s. You buy things you’d buy anyway, like soap and toilet paper, but with key differences: the products are 30% cheaper, you get a percentage of your money back, and you have the chance to sign up others and receive percentages of profit from what they buy. And who of your friends and family wouldn’t want to sign up, knowing they’re getting things cheaper and that you, their friend or relative, are making money in the process?
I can’t say firsthand whether his claim of a 30% discount is accurate, because, oddly enough, the information he left with me did not include price comparisons or product lists — just the same generalities and a form for me to fill with names of people I could sign up. The Quixtar website shows some more or less useless “health and beauty products,” such as energy drinks and vitamin supplements, none of which are particularly cheap. Scott Larsen at Amquix.info did his own price comparison for Amway, and says that, in Amway’s case, the “30% discount” figure is reached by comparing apples to oranges — as Larson describes: “Typical Amway sponsored price comparisons, compare per-use costs of national name brand price leaders, in small packages at grocery stores, against Amway generics in large package sizes.”
Trademark #3: Insidious Mentorship and “Values”
Jerry assured me that as an Independent Business Owner, I wouldn’t be left alone to flounder with my new investment. I would have his constant support, as well as support from his sponsors and everyone else up the line. Most important, I would meet Matt Grotewald, his mentor, who retired when he was 30. Jerry had been searching for a long time, he said, for the right mentor: a man who had achieved success in not just his financial life, not just his spiritual life, not just his married life, but all three at once, and he’d found this renaissance mentor in Matt Grotewald.
Naturally, I didn’t have to participate in the training and support they offered — “after all, it’s your business” — but I would be encouraged to attend meetings and use the training videos and CDs that successful Quixtar IBO’s produced. Though strictly voluntary, I’d be wise to learn from Jerry’s experience. Thinking he could do it all on his own, he called up 30 of his friends, but failed again and again until he let his mentor show him the way to success. And Quixtar mentors teach an entire lifestyle of success — I’d be encouraged to consult them with any and all personal concerns, as well.
This is where I sensed the line between “business opportunity” and “transformative way of life” being blurred. It blurred further when Jerry said that Quixtar is a corporation “founded and operated on Christian values.” I didn’t need to hold with any particular faith, but I should know that there were some “moral guidelines” that were encouraged as good business practices.
What sort of guidelines? Guidelines like: IBO’s make certain they are not seen in a car alone with a business associate’s wife, because what would people think? Or if you’re celebrating some success with the business, you wouldn’t get carried away and hug someone’s wife. Also, because the focus is on optimism and the future, you don’t dwell on the negative. So you should discuss problems with your business or life with your upline mentor, but not with the downlines you’ve sponsored. I asked: What if you’ve signed up your friends, do you think this would put a strain on your relationship? The reply: Maybe if you’re really good friends or something, you could talk about some problems, but otherwise it just isn’t a good idea.
Another warning sign for me was Jerry’s list of the few factors that keep people from being successful through Quixtar. The second item on the list was “Friends” — those who don’t believe in the Quixtar opportunity, that is. The important thing, Jerry said, is to “associate with success.” If you want to be a great tennis player, do you talk to the nobodies you know, or do you ask Andre Agassi?
Does this sound a bit insidious to you? It’s these aspects that inspire accusations of Quixtar as a sort of cult. Whether that label is extreme or dead-on, there was a vibe about Jerry that I hadn’t felt since my high school debates with evangelicals. Part of it was his technique of sidestepping questions — answering them with more questions or changing the subject. When I asked him why this wasn’t a pyramid scheme, he replied along the lines of: “What do you think your job is? You’re at the bottom, and above you is a manager, and somewhere up there is the boss. Pyramids are everywhere!” He was full of pat answers and catchphrases such as “Some will, some won’t, so what?”
The “meetings” evoke more eerie evangelical parallels. Rather than serving to “educate you about your business,” they are more like faith rallies, with chanting, singing, and repetitive speeches exhorting you to stay faithful to the dream and recruit more followers.
The most depressing thing I learned reading the anti-Quixtar/Amway sites is what the real emphasis on this involvement with “mentors” is. The mentors’ business of motivation and inspiration is where the real money is made, not in selling actual products. This economic fact isn’t offered in the presentation — you’ll need outside sources for that helpful information, such as amquix.info’s breakdown of the income of an Executive Diamond in Amway and the infamous Amway “Postma” memo.
Last Call
It appears that most people who seriously pursue the Quixtar dream — financial freedom, early retirement, stronger marriages and more free time — receive just the opposite. They lose thousands of dollars, alienate themselves from their non-Quixtar friends and family, create marital discord, and work themselves ragged in pursuit of a dream fabricated to make money for the fabricators.
