Intonation Music Festival
Earlier this month I went to Chicago for the Intonation Music Festival. While I’ve spent the last few years going to a good many concerts at clubs in the Twin Cities, I’ve never been to a festival-style event before — endeavors like Coachella, Lollapalooza (which took place in Chicago one week later) and the pair of Woodstock reincarnations have always seemed too far, too expensive and too boring.
So while looking for a way to squeeze a road trip into an otherwise homebody summer, I was pleased to find out about the Intonation Festival, which seemed to avoid all those pitfalls. It promised a lineup of 21 bands in two days in Chicago’s Union Park, all for only $22. And the bands had been picked by Pitchfork, the webzine that serves as a hub of indie rock, meaning that I was interested in just about all of them and a big fan of several, like Broken Social Scene, Les Savy Fav and The Decemberists.
Yet despite my agreement with their picks, when trolling the online world of indie rock, Pitchfork always seems to have more detractors than fans, and their curatorship of Intonation brought out some of the cranky folks to complain. This divisiveness doesn’t seem to make sense in light of the magazine’s high readership and wide influence, but it is in part a side-effect of the publication’s odd position as a very influential player in the smallish world of independent music. As a broad type of music defined by its place apart from the mainstream, those in the indie world have developed an almost anarchist ethos that seeks to destroy and ostracize those with power and success — a subculture where backlash against a band perceived as getting too popular too quickly can begin while the artists in question are still subsisting on packets of ramen noodles.
Pitchfork’s share of this flack was evident in the run-up to Intonation; I saw more than one online discussion forum where disdain for Intonation was dished out only because their name was attached. True, the magazine doesn’t help the matter by being more than a little pompous and focusing excessively on certain narrow obsessions. But those traits don’t really inhibit the ability to curate an indie music festival, and the staff’s unquestionable music knowledge made them a good choice on the part of Intonation organizers.
An early web headline on the New York Times write-up of the festival (indeed, there was one — cue the backlash!) read “Website Spawns Music Festival,” and that’s not a bad way to frame it. This was the first time that Pitchfork’s formidable web presence had spilled out to help create an in-the-flesh event, and the weekend took on the air of a debutante ball for the magazine, and by extension, indie rock, a genre that has increasingly spun off its successes (Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie) into the mainstream.
The outstanding lineup the folks at Pitchfork had selected went a long way toward making the weekend a success, and the organizers had gotten the rest of the event’s vibe right, too. In the sweltering heat on Saturday and Sunday, meandering around the park and listening to familiar and new music was the kind of festival experience I had hoped for, and not marred by the $5-bottled-water or rampaging hooligans that have been a part of most other festivals. Performers on the two stages were staggered so that it was possible to see every band if you had the stamina. There was quirky and engaging music from Andrew Bird, the stylish roar of a two-piece called Death From Above 1979, and dance-inducing electronic-y post punk from Out Hud. A good mix, though within very restrictive bounds.
My personal favorite turned out to be Les Savy Fav, a band of rambunctious former art school students whose albums I’ve long enjoyed. The group plays aggressive but carefully structured anthems with a fair amount of smartass nerdiness thrown in — clever lyrics, weird rhythms and ostentatious drama make their way into just about every song.
Les Savy Fav have built a reputation over the years for thrilling, over-the-top live performances defined by the significant stage presence of Tim Harrington, the lead singer. As the second-to-last act on Sunday, the band played to a crowd of almost 15,000, which for a steadfastly independent group (most of their records are released on their own record label) is by far the largest audience they’d ever performed in front of.
They made the most of the opportunity. Harrington was clearly enjoying himself — his antics, which aren’t exactly typical rock star fare (it should be noted, for example, that he has a substantial pot belly), drew the crowd in easily. These included, among other things, jumping down from the stage to stroll through the dense crowd with his microphone, throwing wet sponges at the audience, and clearing way to lay out a Slip n’ Slide for himself. Oh yes, and he also stripped down to his underwear during the course of the set, occasionally donning a straw hat, tinfoil and an old-woman-style shawl.
All of this sounds ridiculously juvenile, which of course it is, but it came off remarkably well as an accompaniment to the band’s frenetic music. In the context of the show, his mugging added to the exuberance of the songs instead of distracting from them. Considering that many of the heroes of the indie world make very boring rock stars, Harrington is a good antidote, and presents a release that was especially welcome among thousands of fans who had just spent two days watching bands in searing heat.
The band played a blistering set, with the crescendos feeding off of Harrington’s performance. He served as maestro, conducting the music with his leaping, screaming and other assorted over-the-top behavior. Live shows are at their best when they strike the right mix between faithful reproduction of album material and unpredictability, keeping the audience both engaged and in suspense, and Les Savy Fav injected enough noodling to keep things interesting.
The crowd in attendance was perhaps the best part of Intonation — a friendly, accommodating group — and was quite taken with the performance. As the largest audience I’ve ever been a part of, it’s impressive how much it adds to the experience, especially for a band like Les Savy Fav that has always put on larger than life shows, even though they were usually in small, dimly lit clubs. We dutifully took a collective step back when told there was too much crowding at the front, and followed Harrington’s periodic directions to sit down, put our arms around our neighbors’ shoulders or scream accompaniment.
With a number of other outstanding performances throughout the weekend and mostly happy concertgoers (aside from complaints about the length of lines at the food vendors), the Intonation Festival — the “first annual,” organizers said — was clear success, and proof that Pitchfork and the indie music community in general don’t have to be mired in cynicism all the time. Pitckfork itself ran a wrap-up feature the following week that made clear what a good time they had and their general giddiness at having pulled it off.
Many of the musicians seemed particularly pleased to be playing in front of such a huge and appreciative audience. A Monday news item at Pitchfork announced that Les Savy Fav might be returning from an indefinite hiatus to record new music. It wasn’t explicitly said that they had been inspired to do so by the appreciative screams of 15,000 people, but it can’t have hurt.
