Hunting for Hyperart
“Hyperart,” being a catch-all for any artistic endeavor residing on the Internet (and synonymous with other catch-alls such as “Web Art” and “net.art”), is a most elusive genre. I was determined to track down quality examples of works in the wild to share and I was not disappointed. Even my most haphazard of investigations yielded a fascinating variety of collections, toys, tools, and works of literary and visual art that use the Net’s qualities to particular advantage.
Most art we find on the Net is simply copied from offline sources in a basic showcase site. Many sites simply reproduce the physical space of the page or canvas online in order to reach broader audiences. One of my favorite basic showcases is mnartists.org, a site created by the Walker Art Center and the McKnight Foundation which provides online space for artists to present their work. More complex showcases online show off an artist’s multimedia design as well as his portfolio: a stellar example of this is Bence Tóth’s “Suitcase”, which is a lavishly rendered, slickly animated interface for viewing his portfolio of paintings, sketches and web design. These sites mainly contain material that does not rely on computers for its existence (i.e., not hyperart), but their online presentation is, of course, unique to the Net.
Part of my search turned up interesting computer- and web-based tools for creative work. I found numerous pages with programs imitating the “cut-up” technique of William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin. The idea is that rearranging or mangling a chunk of text may create phrases of unexpected power, beauty or insight. A good example of such a tool can be found on “Grazulis.”. Another, “When you run out of words,” trims down a text into a few short, hopefully salient, phrases and one of the site’s example texts, from the well-known lyricist, Britney Spears, yields exemplary results, proving that if there’s anything computers are uniquely efficient at doing, it’s randomizing and distorting given texts.
Continuing from tools to toys and widgets, I come to www.zefrank.com, which is an enormous, single-handed collection of goodies. One of them relates especially to the idea of hyperart. “The Scribbler”invites you to doodle, then set The Scribbler in motion. It recreates your doodle in a mildly random way, giving it a “sketched” look. You can adjust the settings for variations in the colors and “sketchiness.” Some of the saved scribbles are remarkably interesting, showing that there is great potential for this sort of embellishing engine. “String Spin” and “Dtoyvsbyokal” produce visual animations from user input, and Ze’s other widgets are similarly trippy to watch.
“Trippy” aptly describes the “ZOOMQUILT” at www.zoomquilt.org, as well. “Surreal” comes to mind, as do two adjectives which are nearly requirements, as I’ll describe shortly, in the world of high hyperart: “circular” and “nonlinear.” It is a Flash animation that has two options — zoom in and zoom out. Either way, the scenery gradually shifts, often causing contextual jumps akin to those in optical illusions. A black drapery becomes the edge of a black sky; an entire vista is revealed to be enclosed in a giant’s maw; a break in a wall expands into a forest. And, of course, if you zoom far enough in either direction, you return to where you began. Like cosmological contemplation, it makes your head feel big. Your curiosity is engaged and compels a continuous exploration of what might appear next. The two possible directions for viewing provide different experiences of the same set of images. In one direction you move forward, discovering new realms within the old; in the other you are pulled backward, seeing the bigger picture surrounding your smaller view. The Zoomquilt is a work I can definitely call hyperart, with its multiple methods of engagement, circularity, and, of course, reliance on the medium of a computer.
Even more hyperartistic is when certain writers use hypertext to connect their poems or narratives in multi-directional, non-sequential ways. “To Find the White Cat in the Snow,” by David Herrstrom, is a series of poems in which each poem contains multiple hyperlinks to other poems. Like any poetic sequence, the thematic objects of cat, snow, and egg are sent through a prism of reflections and perspectives. The difference being that arriving at each poem requires coming from a previous poem, and that reading all of the poems requires “traveling” through poems already read. Each poem is likely to be read multiple times, and from multiple “directions,” in the sequence. This causes, even in an impatient reader, the perception of fresh nuances with each re-reading, and new connections highlighted with the juxtaposition of different poems. Other examples similar to “The White Cat” include Mark Amerika’s Grammatron and Stuart Moulthrop’s Victory Garden. Both utilize hyperlinks to link vignettes of a larger narrative in a non-linear, multi-directional, overlapping weave.
To this English major, it is exciting that, given the nascent stage of hypertext literature and criticism, there are no quick guidelines for the interpretation of hyperlinks. These new choices for hypertext writers offer new levels of complexity, levels that will surely elude the notice of Abrams’ Glossary of Literary Terms for years. The most complex and computerized experiments I found were by Stuart Moulthrop. Pax, an instrument and Reagan Library both blur the line between a game and a work of art. Pax “depicts” (a tenuous term at best) some sort of post-apocalyptic afterlife somehow relating to the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. Characters float upward on the left side, pause when hover your cursor over them, and, when you click, their face appears and some text appears in a column on the right. The characters you click appear more frequently than others as time passes. The text that appears varies depending on who you click, whether they’re “asleep” (more vague) or “awake,” (more specific), and the current time. When the clock has advanced to midnight, the session ends. Numerous accumulations of final texts can result from this process, though unified by the themes of war, apocalypse, the afterlife, and memories. It is an incredibly unique concept, but to me, this experiment is shaky in its results: the texts are too choppy, various, and lacking insight into the characters who “speak” them.
Reagan Library, on the other hand, I found irresistibly involving. At first, it appears to be another series of vignettes hyperlinked together (with the exception that there are Quicktime VR images at the top of each page — but when I first read it I didn’t have the plug-in, so my experience was entirely text-based). As you read and click, it becomes apparent that there is an element of random insertion and arrangement to the texts. Slowly, as you observe patterns in the fonts and colors, the “location” headers (such as “the pavilion,” “geode,” “white cone”), the dots in the lower-left, and the parts of the text that persist between visits to the same page, you realize that the “true” texts are gradually revealing themselves. There are also enticingly vague but helpful “notes” which direct your attention to the patterns and encourage you to keep reading, rather than assume it is simply intentionally garbled. This set of character sketches in an amorphous landscape goes beyond simple hypertext, using Javascript to create a progression over time from a randomly shifting text to one that is stable.
In the variegated landscape of hyperart today, I found nearly as many types and methods as there are artists. Until dominant genres and techniques emerge, along with methods of interpretation, canonization, and other scholarly accretions, “hyperart” is broad term for a big, crazy scene. Which is why you should venture out on your own into the world of — dare I say it — hyperartistry.
