We’re All Going To Die Anyway

Consider the following quote, taken from Josef Issels’ 1999 book Cancer, A Second Opinion: “One out of every six persons alive today will contract, and die from, cancer.” It seems it should be shocking, but it’s not. Almost everyone who has had any sort of education already knows this, at least in an abstract sense: a depressingly large number of people are going to die from cancer in the next few generations. Furthermore, many of us are aware that the most unsettling fact isn’t that so many people will die from cancer — in his book Matters of Life and Death, John Cairns points out that one reason so many people die from cancer is that so many people are able to live long enough to get cancer — but that a large portion of cancer is caused by pollution and toxicity, both man-made problems that, despite the existence of bureaucracies like OSHA, don’t seem to be adequately addressed on a personal, local, national or global level. As Issels writes: “One of the most startling statistics resulting from the past fifty years of cancer research is that eighty percent of all cancer is caused by the interaction between individual and the environment in which he lives . . . we might now be able to prevent about forty percent of the cancer deaths that occur annually in men, and a somewhat smaller proportion — about ten percent in women.” But we all know this, too: we’ve all been told ad nauseam that the world humans have created is destroying humans at a rate far more rapid than necessary. This, we know, is due mostly to lifestyle choices and habits that are so ingrained in our culture that most people don’t even think of them as problems. It’s strange: we’re aware that there are environmental problems (like where to put all our trash, for example) and we collectively feel that if we refuse to think of them, they’re not really problems — an out of sight, out of mind sort of trick.

So when we learn that there aren’t just the obvious environmental problems that we’ve all chosen to ignore, but also another level of more specific information, it’s annoying: there’s a smattering of fixable behavior and impending disaster just beneath the easily-glossed over problems of global warming and species extinction. Take for example Joel S. Hirschhorn and Kirsten U. Oldenburg’s 1991 book Prosperity Without Pollution. It catalogues many of the problems with pollution and our current lifestyle and then provides solutions, both short-term and long-term. In one instance, Hirschhorn and Oldenburg point out that recycling programs created to recycle empty hazardous waste containers are pretty much irrelevant: all the toxic material, with society’s blessing, has already been used! In other words, all the bleach and toxic fertilizer is already making its way towards our groundwater — it doesn’t matter if the container that used to hold it is being treated gingerly. Knowing this sort of thing is depressing, particularly when it’s accompanied by quote such as “New York’s Nassau County has estimated that 83,000 gallons of organic chemicals from household products end up in their groundwater each year.”

It seems there’s nothing we can do about it — getting everyone to stop using bleach, for example, would be a Herculean task. No matter that Hirschhorn and Oldenburg have an answer ready: a solution of vinegar and water apparently works quite well as a household cleaner, it’s safe, inexpensive, and it can be stored in re-usable, around-the-house containers, thus saving on waste as well as avoiding toxicity. People could use this to clean their houses and, had I known better, perhaps I would have — maybe I will now. The same goes for vacuum cleaners. Hirschhorn and Oldenburg point out that a vacuum cleaner is a huge drain on electricity considering that people used to use brooms. I’d not realized this at all, though with leaf blowers and lawn mowers I certainly had — a leaf blower, besides being pointless, is awful for the environment. The book, Prosperity Without Pollution is replete with such tidbits, little facts that, upon consideration, I realize I should have figured out myself and implemented long ago.

My previous ignorance of these specific facts can be attributed simply to willful ignorance and laziness on one hand — ignorance and laziness both in terms of my not making a point of discovering these things for myself, and in terms of society’s general complacency and blithe acceptance of the status quo. On the other hand, it can also be attributed to the active interference with and covering up of information by corporations and special interests. Sadly — and ominously — instances of the latter are not at all uncommon; they are, in fact, standard practice. Al Gore, in his introduction to Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, describes the accusations and the tarnishing of reputation that Carson had to endure in the 1960s for daring to suggest that DDT was creating serious environmental problems. She was called hysterical and extremist and Gore concludes by saying that these “charges [are] still heard today whenever anyone questions those whose financial well-being depends on maintaining the environmental status quo.” Similar acts of corporate bullying and cover up can be found in the documentary The Corporation, which documents how Monsanto Corporation bought off the U.S. government, successfully threatened reporters, and still refuses to admit the manifest problems with bovine growth hormone — in short, Monsanto won the fight. It still gets to use a toxic chemical and produce milk that in all likelihood is carcinogen-filled and the FDA refuses to alert consumers of this — in fact the FDA permits bovine growth hormone and the hard-won facts the reporters have been struggling to reveal have mostly been suppressed. And, best of all for Monsanto, ninety-nine percent of the American population has no idea that such a thing is happening.

That we, as a general public, accept and take for granted such corporate bullying isn’t difficult to realize: take, for example, the recent release The Constant Gardner. Though fictional, it seems extremely plausible — much of the movie is about a large corporation covertly testing unstable drugs on impoverished and starving Africans, treating them like guinea pigs and often killing them. The corporation silences (or murders) anyone who tries to stop the practice and the fact that the corporation does this does not seem at all far-fetched — it would take a naive person indeed to not realize that this happens relatively frequently. What’s so disheartening is that, as Hirschhorn and Oldenburg point out, these instances of corporate interference make laziness and indifference to environmental (and other) problems all the easier: “When people choose prevention [of pollution], they have not necessarily taken the simple route. The simplest thing to do is just to accept that government and industry policies regarding toxic substances protect public health and the environment. Choosing prevention acknowledges that government actions apply to limited kinds of products and in inconsistent ways, and that industry does not always have the consumer’s best interests as its top priority . . . It requires more attention and effort than accepting the status quo.” In other words, because a number of people have a vested interest in keeping our lifestyle the same, it is harder to prevent pollution rather than accept it, but at some point you have to wonder: people like myself, who are fully (or, at least, mostly) aware of the pollution problem and yet still participate in it, What is the excuse for our actions? And, furthermore, Do we even need an excuse?

I would argue that in some ways we don’t — in some ways it is too hard (or too much trouble) to do the absolutely perfect thing for the environment. Let me take an example from my life: I drive my car an average of about twenty miles a week — surely this is good for the environment compared to the amount most people drive. But better still would be not having a car. But here’s the problem: I used to work as an office temp, and then as a mosquito inspector, and each job was far enough away (and not on a bus route) that I absolutely needed a car to get there — for a while, the choice was: no-car-to-save-the-environment-but-as-a-result-be-unemployeed-and-leeching-money-from-either-my-parents-or-welfare vs. having-a-car-that-pollutes-but-also-having-a-job. The choice was a no brainer.

Here’s another contradiction: I work in the take-out section of a chain restaurant and the ridiculous amount of disposable packaging that’s necessary to box up an order, along with the copious amounts of food thrown in the trash at the end of each night, well, it’s embarrassing — I work for the kind of company that’s a textbook example of corporate indifference towards the environment and human health. (Incidentally, most of my coworkers share this indifference.) But, because of this job, which is within walking distance of my apartment, I don’t have to drive my car nearly as often as I used to — in some ways I’m doing better for the environment and in other ways worse. But do I quit my job? Of course not. Quitting on the basis of never working in service of ‘the man’ would be much more trouble than I’d be willing to put forth: I’d have to search for another job, one, preferably, that’s part-time, pays enough to live off of, has unlimited vacation time, no stress, and is within easy walking distance of my apartment — very difficult standards to meet, so difficult that I doubt I could find anything even remotely close to the job I have, one which took me two years to land.

Here’s the crux of the issue: I have one life to live and at a certain point I’m simply not willing to sacrifice a majority of that life to do what’s absolutely best for the environment, the nation or human health. At a certain point, I have to live in the service of me and no one else. In other words, I can’t quit my job in take-out in the name of some self-imposed moral mandate. I simply can’t bring myself to do it, especially because I know that if I were to take such a mandate to its logical extreme, I would have to entirely give up life within our consumer culture and spend the rest of my days as a marginalized eco-prophet, something I would never do: I’m happy living as a relatively normal American in the twenty-first century.

And my example demonstrates one of the biggest challenges to policy makers and environmentalists: the challenge isn’t to convince people that pollution and our current lifestyle are problems, nor even to find solutions, but to construct ways (in terms of a social attitude as well as inventions and innovations) whereby the transition from the current lifestyle to a more ecologically sustainable (and healthy) lifestyle is palatable to the majority of the population. Because, as it is now, most of us are only willing to countenance minor changes that, however laudable and worthwhile, aren’t going to be the long-term solution. Small changes within the current system, though a step in the right direction, pander too much to the status quo and aren’t far-reaching enough. Something like building much more fuel-efficient cars, though a decent idea, will only stave off disaster — i.e., instead of gasoline running out in 2030, maybe it won’t happen until 2070 — without actually solving the problem: sometime or the other gasoline (to use one example) is going to run out and if we haven’t transitioned to a completely different mode of fuel (or even transportation) before then, we’ll be in big trouble. Unfortunately, to be a fully ecologically responsible citizen in present day America, a person has to become part of an ostracized minority that does not participate in popular culture.¹ So it’s no surprise that people continue to buy and drive cars everywhere, that sprawl, waste, and pollution continue, even as awareness of the problem increases and time to fix it decreases. In short, we don’t just need to completely change our lifestyles, but we also need someone to make that change fashionable, enjoyable, and pleasant — otherwise most of us won’t ever do it. As it is now, most people feel that the prospect of future disaster isn’t worth the heavy mortgage on the present — in other words, they’re having too much fun with things as they are.

1. Note: Just because you recycle, this does not make you a fully ecologically responsible citizen. Though the intentions behind the program were good (and sincere), in many ways it’s backfired: since it’s popular and easy, people feel that if they’re recycling they’re doing their duty to the environment, that nothing else is wrong, and that everything will be okay. What most don’t realize is that recycling is not nearly as effective as it’s often made out to be — in the end, one could argue that recycling does little more than ameliorate our collective guilt. Hirschhorn and Oldenburg point out that recycling is only a slightly better alternative to throwing everything away. Furthermore, they assert, we need to stop thinking in terms of what’s slightly better than just trashing everything — there are solutions far more effective than recycling that we are ignoring simply because recycling is better than what we used to do, and therefore seems enough. In short, recycling — as it is currently done (and because of its popularity) — breeds complacency.
