The Fire From the Wire
Back when I had aspirations of staying ahead of the curve of music listening and music writing, I was pretty daunted to learn that a music critic might be expected to compile a year-end list of their favorite albums, and that this list might require up to 50 spots. Having never listened to 50 albums from any given year in my life, I thought that would be kind of tough. My list would probably have had to include 3-8 albums that were genuine favorites, another 10-15 that I thought were kind of good, then the balance of albums that I had at least heard in their entirety. But that still wouldn’t make fifty, so I’d have to fill out the back of the list with albums I’d heard parts of, or single songs from, or heard a DJ mention on the radio, or seen an advertisement for in a glossy magazine that I’d once seen a stranger flipping through at a bad party. The list would be, at best, 10 percent passion, 20 percent ho-hum appraisal, and 70 percent covering my ass. This mixtape is my way of recapping 2005 while keeping myself in that top ten percent, but be aware: I’ve listened to 22 albums that have been released this year, so don’t take this seriously.

Bloc Party — “Like Eating Glass”
Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm arrived in February, with the year’s first gust of major buzz, and it sounded like a treatise on how-to-be-very-good-but-by-no-means-great. It’s rather curious how something can be this fresh and accomplished, this clearly head and shoulders above its Brit-rock peers, yet not flirt with greatness even once. What signs of flirtation there are occur in album opener “Like Eating Glass,” the first minute of which unfolds with perfectly orchestrated propulsion; it’s like the opening credits of a great film. By the time the intro levels off into the vocal, the album’s completely hit its stride.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! — “In This Home On Ice”
When I first heard this song, I started laughing. This band was the new Arcade Fire? Of course, the first unknown band of 2005 to have any emotional pretenses and score at least a 9.0 on the Pitchfork scale was going to get to be the new Arcade Fire, but “In This Home On Ice” takes off like a smooth, engrossing run through shoegaze territory and then hits a downright comical hiccup when this . . . guy . . . starts . . . singing. Imagine you’re watching Lost in Translation for the first time, and they’re coming home from the karaoke room in the cab, and the heavy beauty of My Bloody Valentine strikes a chord in you, and you don’t know who that band is, and then amidst the swollen and glossy nocturne tumult, the distinct wail of a Muppet is abruptly heard. This is what “In This Home On Ice” sounds like to the uninitiated. Alec Ounsworth sings like he just took a mouthful of helium and any second it’s going to run out. Tonally, he’s comical, but rhythmically, he’s perfect, and once you get used to it (if you do), his voice provides that one totally unexpected and incongruous element that makes this one of the year’s most enjoyable songs.

Broken Social Scene — “Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)”
I never thought I’d love a song with a title like this, but Broken Social Scene is a fair approximation of how much fun it is to hook up with someone you might even dislike, provided the atmospherics are right. When I saw Broken Social Scene in concert a couple years ago, lead man Kevin Drew was berating us for responding apathetically to our golden chance to vote Dennis Kucinich into the presidency. Next I heard from him, Drew was changing the title of this album from the excellent Windsurfing Nation into a self-titled cop out with bad album art and imploring us to choose our own title. People like this are supposed to be the bad artists. There’s so much talent coming in from so many sources in Broken Social Scene, though, that individual warts don’t much matter. “Ibi” obliterates its awkward title just as well as Broken Social Scene obliterate their own, boasting one of the most infectious, seething hooks of the year. People criticize this album for being too diffuse, but they must have been writing on a deadline; songs like this whirl themselves into clarity after a few listens.
Wilderness — “End of Freedom”
This Wilderness album is definitely, definitely the best release of the year containing a bellowing front-man who shouts everything twice. Wilderness’ self-titled debut is my favorite overlooked album of 2005, containing certain similarities to Explosions in the Sky’s similarly overlooked-at-the-time The Earth is Not a Cold, Dead Place. Wilderness songs are post-rock soundscapes of relative brevity that hardly build on themselves and contain a lot of bleating. (What, no cheers?) Frontman James Johnson invents a new figure in the music world: the wild man on the mountain with an art-rock band and a brimstone oratory. His voice is a bludgeoning instrument of unrelenting gravity and surprising uplift. Many will hate it, and with good reason. Even “End of Freedom” is afflicted by vices of pretentiousness and repetition; what’s extraordinary is that it fulfills what it portends. It’s a doom-saying cry, poignant with receding beauties and rushes of fin de monde power.

Sigur Ros — “Gong”
Takk is the first Sigur Ros album that could be accused of playing it safe, and not coincidentally, it’s their first album that I haven’t played at least fifty times. On Aegaetis Byrjun, Sigur Ros were demigods; they can still produce that effect life, but on record they’re now just my favorite band that uses bells a lot. Laws of nature, I guess. Takk is still quite a good album, but most of it sounds like the answer to Sigur Ros asking themselves: “What do we sound like?” It’s an unadventurous distillation of what’s already known. One surprising track, though, is “Gong,” an echoing dirge that leaps forward upon skittering, metallic drums. It starts like a tragedy, ends like a romance, and proves that Sigur Ros are still better off sharing sounds with Radiohead than Tubular Bells.
Antony & the Johnsons — “For Today I Am a Boy”
I find “For Today I Am a Boy” the most effecting song on the uniformly fine I Am a Bird Now for how much it reveals character. The album seems permeated with the atmosphere of gay New York, something I know nothing whatever about except through drama. Sheepishly, I imagine I Am a Bird Now as what “Angels in America” would be if it were “Rent,” and about androgyny rather than AIDS or poverty. “For Today I Am a Boy” would be Antony’s introductory song in any such musical. Independent music is no stranger to men with androgynous voices and personas; Antony is a striking figure because his astonishing voice is the only androgynous part of him. He looks like a middle-aged Marlon Brando; it’s only through music that he can transform himself into a bird girl, and his bittersweet awareness of this is powerfully evident in his songwriting. “For Today I Am a Boy” inspires because it longs for a physical transformation that will never come, yet artistically is already complete.
Devendra Banhart — “Dragonflies”
Devendra Banhart’s Cripple Crow has 22 songs and my favorite is the one that lasts 59 seconds. I suppose it’s the only one that doesn’t lull me into a charmed indifference. Cripple Crow sounds like a masterful revival of some era of classic folk that I never paid attention to in the first place. It’s warm and idiosyncratic and endlessly charming, but a little part of me is saying “so what” through most of the tracks. There’s an irrelevance to it that I can’t quite pin down. Maybe it just hits a dead spot in my own appreciation, I don’t know. The best way I can illustrate the feeling it gives me is to pass along a short, unrelated vignette. One of Banhart’s muses is Vashti Bunyan, who recorded an album called Just Another Diamond Day in 1970. After making this album, she “ostensibly retired from music, leaving London in 1968 in a horse-drawn wagon on a two-year journey to the Hebrides, with the ultimate goal of meeting folk icon Donovan on the Isle of Skye.” What I like about “Dragonflies” is that it conjures up all the crackling, rural magic that one might feel when guiding horses through the moors to meet Donovan . . . but it’s about drinking beer.
Sleater-Kinney — “Entertain”
Sleater-Kinney are probably more derided in their own hometown than anywhere, but they probably wouldn’t have written “Entertain” if this weren’t so. The hatred of the wannabe for the established figure lies pretty thick over Portland, Oregon, and it’s Sleater-Kinney who have born the brunt of our seething, unadmitted jealousy for as long as I’ve lived here. They’re older and wiser and better than “the scene,” and these are all unforgivable things. The riveting hypocrisy of people ravenously tearing apart their betters makes for good bar-side drama, but I wouldn’t have thought it’d make for quite such a good political anthem as “Entertain” is. Somehow the petty, self-important affairs of hipsters are skewered and thrown under this steamroller of a song, which is such a gratifyingly powerful call to arms that it’s almost self-parody.

Binary Dolls — “I Am the Only Master of the Ten-Key”
This is a local, Portland band. Their concerts are enjoyable for the triangle of tension that exists between their habitual loathing of themselves, occasional derision towards one another, and ever-present contempt for their audience. The chorus of this song is: “I’m professional / I’m professional / professional / I’m professional. You’re all amateurs / you’re amateurs / amateurs / you’re amateurs.” I feel this is a winning sentiment as long as it’s coming from a band of amateurs, which it is here. If the Binary Dolls ever do go professional, they’ll have to stop playing it, but as long as they’re playing the undercard for vastly inferior acts with larger followings, it rings out as a protest from the unappreciated. Oh, and it sounds like an overly mechanical Radiohead song and has good drums. And the ten-key was an adding machine popular in the first quarter of the last century.

M.I.A. — “Amazon”
What I like about this song is that it’s a dance track in which a diva ponders Stockholm Syndrome. Kidnapping is probably the only serious exterior threat that grows exponentially as you get richer and more famous; shouldn’t more divas be worrying about this? Since M.I.A. has a sort of up-from-the-third-world glamor about her, she’s definitely the proper spokeswoman here. Not only does this song, like every other one on Arular, make you feel glamorous in a new way, it invites you to shake your ass like Patty Hearst.
Wolf Parade — “I’ll Believe in Anything”
“I’ll Believe in Anything” is an inarticulate cry that can hardly fail to be understood perfectly. I don’t know what the guy is wishing for when he cries “if I could take the fire out from the wire,” but there is not an ounce of confusion in “I’d take you where nobody knows you, and nobody gives a damn.” This is my song of the year; I didn’t find it; it found me; to fill the opening made by the only event of my year that needed a soundtrack. Sometimes I wonder if the song is really worthy of this position. Is it as poignant and unfading as I want it to be? Does it bug me that it contains the couplet “I could give you my apologies / by handing over my neologies?” Perhaps, but it hasn’t come up short in a pinch yet. Though these lines occasionally end in unfortunate ways, this is largely incidental; the song is all about the core of the lines: “I could give you . . . ” “I’d take you . . .” and “give me.” It’s all elemental wants and aching voids, an inchoate gesture of romance and pain. “Give me your eyes, I need sunshine” — I don’t see anything around here that’s better than that.
Low — “When I Go Deaf”
I’m not sure why Low’s The Great Destroyer got maligned; it’s as up and down as all their other records. They’re one of those bands that never entirely peak and never entirely fade — each album is worth hearing for the two or three great songs it will contain, but nobody can ever agree on what these two or three songs are. Like Guided By Voices did, Low inspires a unique and private relationship in almost every listener. The song that gets me most on The Great Destroyer is “When I Go Deaf,” which manages to turn a potentially gratuitous guitar solo into the peak of a poignant dramatic arc. Musicians don’t seem very good at theatrical conceits, but the idea that Alan Sparhawk is turning his amplifier up to 11 to answer his own prayer for the peace of soundlessness is unexpected and gripping.
Superwolf — “I Gave You”
Years ago, during our breakup, someone gave me a song called “Snowman” by a band called The Nields to show me how cold and uncaring I was. Over time, though, the song has lost its power to strip me bare and turned into an emblem of the relative triviality of A___ and me. How little the girl must have ever cared for me, to pick such a mundane little trifle of a song as a kiss-off! I don’t care if The Nields were her favorite band; they’re punchless. In response, I hold up “I Gave You,” as an anthem for the unrequited and a dirge that would not seem weak even when applied to the bitterest break.
