The Yearly Canon
Yes, it’s that time of year again. No, not the time of holidays or parties or feasting or seasonal affective disorder; it’s time for the year-end lists to arrive! Those special few weeks when we who instinctively think in bullet points rather than paragraphs can rejoice and revel in hundreds, nay, thousands of hierarchical descriptions of the year in, well, just about everything.
Fimoculous Rex, who has been collecting these slices of heaven for a few years now (check his mention in the New York Times from New Year’s 2004), provides an impressive cross-section: sex, words, books, music, toys, science, business, people, and so on and so forth. I admit to this media event being one of the highlights of my year, but as time passes I question the value of these lists more and more. Generally they allow me to be a lot less obsessed with the newest gadget, book, or DVD during the year since I know that come December I’ll be provided with a categorized list of everything that was worthwhile in the past twelve months. It’s a great time for critics both professional and amateur to promote their favorite overlooked items that might otherwise go unread, unseen, unused. Not to mention how fun it is to compare lists and argue with those whose tastes are, obviously, less refined than your own. And really, who’s as culturally savvy as you? No one, of course!
John Darnielle, the man behind lo-fi indie legends The Mountain Goats as well as the much-respected music blog Last Plane to Jakarta, has a lot to say on the matter, but for the sake of brevity here’s a quote from a September post: “My longstanding opposition to year-end lists is a matter of public record, but my stance softens a lot when the list is genre-specific: I can understand a ‘ten best dance albums of the year’ list a hell of a lot better than I can understanding trying to quantify how Young Jeezy’s album compares to the Anonymous 4’s treatment of Hildegard von Bingen.”
This is basically an alternate way of phrasing one of my pet issues, which is, how possible is it to define greatness in, for example, music when every person is looking for different qualities or experiences? It seems pretty obvious that place, mood, and situation can very much determine a response to music, or most anything for that matter, so the list of an unmarried, 30-year old male in New York City may be completely irrelevant to a 50-year old mother in North Dakota. Thus, when someone claims to have whittled down an entire year’s output in any form or medium to the “best,” how universal is that claim intended to be?
Lists, just like Soulseek, mashups, the demonization of “rockism,” and other recent phenomena, encourage us to listen to everything. Unless you’re either insanely obsessed or very narrowly focused, surveying the year’s lists will probably leave you feeling overwhelmed at the amount of stuff you haven’t experienced. It’s likely, though, that upon further reflection you’ll realize that you don’t have gaping periods of free time to fill with new and exciting albums, movies, or what have you. Is it useful to attempt to expose yourself to far more than you can possibly comprehend and digest? I’d guess ultimately not.
So, here are a couple of alternative suggestions. One, which I’m considering for this year, is an in-depth exploration of how you were affected by a single item or experience. This doesn’t have to be your favorite or “the best,” just something that was important to you and, most vitally, that upon reading will renew your or someone else’s passion for the sort of thing you’re writing about. The obvious model for this is the 33 1/3 series of music-focused monographs in which a somewhat well-known fan spends an entire book reflecting on a single album that affected him/her deeply.
My other suggestion, which I implemented and much enjoyed last year, is a list of EVERYTHING. It’s sort of the opposite of Darnielle’s suggestion about the ten best dance albums: instead of just weighing the comparative merits of Brokeback Mountain and Capote, juxtapose the best sunset you saw with the tastiest ice cream you ate with everything else about your year that was, in some way, good. Sure, sometimes it might be interesting to see what you thought were the top ten singles of 1997, but I’d wager that you’d be much more excited to reminisce about all the good times you had in a less exclusive fashion. Plus, any time you’re feeling pessimistic or depressed, all you’ve got to do is pull out your list and realize how much you’ve probably got to look forward to. That beats arguing over idiotic minutiae any day.
